This week the Syracuse New Times published an article on immigrant children. It describes the journey of Central American children to the US as documented by former Syracuse photographer Michelle Frankfurter. Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers will expire if not used on a federal income tax return for any year during a period of five consecutive years, the Internal Revenue Service announced today. That is, the IRS will not deactivate an ITIN that has been used on at least one tax return in the past five years. To give all interested parties time to adjust and allow the IRS to reprogram its systems, the IRS will not begin deactivating ITINs until 2016. Further details here.…

The Immigration Service announced that it will offer some additional benefits to nationals of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone who are currently in the US as a humanitarian response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Most significantly USCIS will accept change of status and extension of status applications from nationals of the above countries, even if the applicant is out of status. The Social Security Administration announced that as of August 1, 2014, they will no longer provide social security cards at the time of an in-person application or soon after the in-person application. It may take up to two weeks to receive the card. Social security card applicants may receive an instant letter online verifying their application by using a Social Security account.
